PHOTOGRAPHY

The Photography Department offers courses that fulfill General Education and transfer requirements. For all photography courses, students must provide their own 35mm camera with adjustable aperture, shutter speed and focus controls.

 

PHOT 100 Basic Photography  (3)

This course is for beginning photographers to learn not only 35mm camera operation and film exposure, but also the aesthetic considerations of composition, use of lighting and color to make natural and urban landscapes, portraits, close-ups, night photographs and photo essays. No darkroom work.  Letter grade or credit/no credit option. (Degree credit)

PHOT 101 Introduction to Photography (3) (CAN ART 18)

2 hours lecture, 4 hours lab per week. Students are responsible for purchasing conventional black-and-white film, negative pages, black-and-white photographic enlarging paper and mount board.

This course is for beginning photographers to learn not only 35mm camera operations and film exposure, but also the skills of film development and darkroom technique. Students will produce a variety of black-and-white enlargements in achieving technical competence leading eventually to prints of high quality. The course also covers the historical, cultural and aesthetic foundations of photography. (Degree credit)

PHOT 103 Intermediate Photography (3)

Prerequisite: PHOT 101 Introduction to Photography with a grade of "C" or better.

2 hours lecture, 4 hours lab per week. Students are responsible for purchasing conventional black-and-white and slide film, negative and slide pages, black-and-white photographic enlarging paper and mount board.

This course is for photographers with a good command of the 35mm camera and of darkroom skills who want to expand the skills acquired in PHOT 101. Students will produce color slides, close-ups, professional headshots as well as learn to make Ilfochromes, cyanotypes, Polaroid Image Transfer and window mats. The course requires a Final Portfolio at the end of the semester which demonstrates a particular direction through content, lighting, theme or approach. (Degree credit)

PHOT 109 F  Portrait Photography (3)

Prerequisite: PHOT 101 Introduction to Photography with a grade of "C" or better.

 

2 hours lecture, 4 hours lab per week. Students are responsible for purchasing conventional black-and-white film, negative preserver pages, black-and-white photographic enlarging paper and mount board.

This course is for photographers with a good command of the 35mm camera and of darkroom skills who want to explore portraiture in the studio and on location, traditional as well as contemporary approaches to making portraits.
